Deputy Sheriff Captain Jose Nunez

Jose Nunez has been a dedicated member of the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office since 1996, making notable contributions throughout his career. Of Dominican descent, Nunez brings a rich cultural perspective to his role in law enforcement, enhancing his impact on both the Sheriff's Office and the broader community. Jose Nunez has made history as the first Hispanic in Suffolk County to rise from Deputy Sheriff to Sergeant in 2014, then to Lieutenant in 2021, and most recently to Captain within the Sheriff’s Office.

As a respected law enforcement professional, Nunez has played a crucial role in fostering diversity and inclusion by teaching classes on Diversity, Sensitivity, and Multicultural Awareness to new recruits. In his role as the Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Officer, he has been pivotal in managing and addressing these critical issues. His leadership extends beyond departmental duties, as evidenced by his active participation in the Honor Guards and his role as President of the Bronze Shields. His advocacy for his colleagues is also highlighted by his two terms on the Deputy Sheriff P.B.A. Union Board.

Nunez's impact extends well beyond his role in law enforcement, showcasing a deep commitment to community service. He has served on the “Suffolk Community College Get There from Here” Advisory Board, which recommends scholarship grants to incoming students. He was actively involved with the Brentwood Compass and Civic Group, preventing youth substance abuse. Additionally, he served as participant and collaborator with Islip Youth Enrichment Services, providing mentoring and outreach services. Moreover, Nunez served as Chair of the Brookhaven Town Hispanic Advisory Board and continues to be actively involved.

His dedication to public service has been recognized with numerous commendations, including a Certificate of Appreciation from County Executive Steve Levy for his support of the “Stand Up For The Homeless Initiative” and a Proclamation from Senator Caesar Trunzo in recognition of his public service contributions. Nunez’s commitment to community and youth development is further demonstrated by his efforts to raise $9,000 and chaperone youth from Infant Jesus Parish in Port Jefferson, NY, on a missionary trip to El Salvador.
