Chief of Staff Charles L'Hommedieu

Charles L’Hommedieu entered the workforce building aircraft for Grumman Aerospace. He loved his job but took the ominous sign of increasing layoffs as incentive to begin attending college part time while working on the A6-Intruder. Upon graduation from SCCC he left Grumman to begin a new career working as an RN. He received specialized training in emergency medicine and worked for many years in several local area emergency departments. Having taken civil service exams along the way, he was selected to attend the Sheriff’s Office Academy where he graduated as Valedictorian of his class.

Charles now has 32 years with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. His service spans four administrations and he has received promotions from each. He is currently assigned to the Chief of Staff’s office.

Charles is a graduate of the National Jail Leadership Command Academy (NJLCA) and the first to receive certification by the American Jail Association (AJA) as a Jail Manager on Long Island. He served on the board of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association (COBA), is an EMT, has been an Instructor at the Academy throughout his career and was recently certified as a Master Instructor for the Criminal Justice Instructor Development Course.

He has led several Commands during his tenure which include the First District Court detention facility, First Responder Assistance Team (FRAT), Public Access Defibrillation Program (PAD), Critical Incident Team (CIT), Visiting section, Community Relations Unit (CRU) and Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT). He served as the Interim Director of the Sheriff’s DWI program where he aided in the transition to the Sheriff’s Addiction Treatment Program (SATP) and led the opening of the latest and most modern correctional facility in Yaphank.

Charles received his Bachelor’s degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Stony Brook University as well as his Master’s degree. He is board certified and licensed as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and is an Adjunct Professor for Stony Brook University.
