SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE LEANDRA’S LAW DWI ARREST

ONE OF TWELVE DWI ARRESTS OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

*****

(RIVERHEAD, NY) Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Deputies made a Leandra’s Law arrest late Saturday night on North Ocean Ave. in Farmingville.

At approximately 1:41 AM on 11/28/21, Deputies observed a van failing to maintain its lane on North Ocean Ave. in Farmingville. Upon stopping the vehicle, Deputies found the driver, William Coelho-Marques, 37, of Brentwood, to be showing signs of intoxication. Deputies also observed Coelho-Marques’ four-year-old child sitting in the front passenger seat without any safety restraints. Mr. Coelho-Marques was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra’s Law. He was transported to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Civil Bureau where he submitted to a chemical blood test; the results of which are pending laboratory results by the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory. The child’s mother was called to the scene to pick up her child.

Leandra’s Law (the Child Passenger Protection Act) is a NYS law making it an automatic felony on the first offense to drive drunk with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle. It was named after 11 year-old Leandra Rosado who was killed on the Henry Hudson Parkway on October 11, 2009, when she was the passenger in a car accident, driven by a driver who was allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The Leandra’s Law arrest of Mr. Coelho-Marques was one of TWELVE arrests for Driving While Intoxicated, occurring late Wednesday night into early Sunday morning. These arrests were all part of ongoing DWI enforcement by the Sheriff’s Office.
